You all know the story of how Odysseus sailed from troy after the battle of troy right? Well I’m here to tell you the story from a different point. First, let me tell you a little about me. Most people have never heard of me, the first goddess to be kicked out of Mt. Olympus. Zeus likes to keep what happened a secret. My name is Colista-angel, which means beautiful angel. And that’s exactly what I am. Beautiful. My power is to control the emotions and behaviors of animals. I can make them sleep, and I can give them strength. Ok, now that we all know each other, on with the story… This happened just before Odysseus finished his battle in troy. I was leaning down from my spot in the clouds, a good distance from Olympus, no need for Hera to find me again. Anyway, I was watching as a small girl walked down the hall of her high school. suddenly, another girl popped out of now where, and shoved the girl out of the way. instantly, a swarm of bee's flew out and chased the bigger girl down the hall. Now, you all are probably wondering why I’m spying on this girl, and why a bunch of bees are chasing another girl. Looks like its time for a back-story. About fourteen years ago, I worked for Zeus, keeping his royal pets happy. One day, Hera decided to go out and visit a relative or what ever, and I was doing my job, feeding the sheep, when something came over me. I was pulled away from the flock, to see Zeus walking out of the castle. I always admired Zeus for how strong and hansom he was. I went over to him, and asked what he thought of me. He said I was doing a great job with his animals, and he appreciated all I was doing. Now, I’ll spare you the details of what happened next, long story short, I’m no longer welcome on Mt. Olympus. So, what does this have to do with the girl? What does this even have to do with Odysseus? Hang on and I’ll tell you. Soon after this “Encounter” with Zeus, Melissa was born. Yes, that’s the little girl in the hallway. She was my daughter, that I tried to keep from Hera, but being the goddess she is, that was near impossible. When Hera found out, she went ballistic on Zeus. She forced him to turn her mortal, and put her in a time period where I could never find her. And since Zeus, (though he would never admitted) slightly feared Hera, ever since the take over no one is supposed to know about. That’s what they get for telling secrets in front of animals! So, now Melissa lives with a nice couple in the year 2010, and she goes to a high school, and she lives a basic human life. You might be wondering how I can see her in the future, like I said, I can control the thoughts of animals, I can also see through their eyes. Good thing she has a hamster, two dogs, and a cat. And that’s how I spend my day, helping her through everyday life. Now, I tell you what this all has to do with Odysseus. Remember how I said I was spying on my cloud, when it all started? Good, now I have to tell you one more detail about what I can do. Occasionally, a thought comes into my head, from an animal. Usually when they are afraid, or scared, or just want someone to talk to. So, while I was watching Melissa, this sheep popped up, and said, “hey, Colista, can you stop those people down there from slaughtering my buddies? They just took out my buddy, and he still owed me a bale of hay!” this was a regular sheep, always complaining about something or another. He had a slight problem gambling his food. Before I could answer though, he screamed, and then fell silent. After a while, he said, “yup. Figures, they just ate me.” Then he disappeared. Darn. At this point, I had a choice. Help the sheep, or watch the kid. Guess which I chose? Now, for those who read the odyssey, you know about the Cyclops right? Yes, that was all me. See, what most people don’t know is that Cyclops is a part animal. So, yah, I can control them. I got in his head, and told him which men he should take. How was I supposed to know the fools would blind him? Well, Polyphemus told his dad, Poseidon, who ended up messing with Odysseus’s plans for home. Now, fast-forward about ten years. just before Odysseus got home. I was going around, doing my job, waking the hibernating bears and squirrels, giving a flock of birds directions home, you know, the usual. When I came across Odysseus’s place. In the field, half dead, was a dog. I knew from previous visits that this was Odysseus’s promised hunting dog, Argus. He wasn’t exactly the pick of the litter, but Odysseus saw something special in the young pups eyes. Sadly though, He never got to go hunting with his master before he was called off to Troy. The poor thing was old now, worn down from year of hunting with Odysseus’s men. I had come back many a time to inform the old dog that his time had come, but that stubborn old hound refused to come. He told me, “I just want to see my master one more time. I know he’ll be back.” So I just left the old dog be. I sighed and slowly descended towards the old hound. “Argus, its time. You can’t hold on anymore, just look at you.” The old dog sighed. “I’ve held on twenty years. I can hold one a little longer. I just know he’ll be back.” Then he flopped back on the dirt, watching the field, as if he could bring the man back with his will. Suddenly, someone came across the field. Argus tried to jump up, but his old legs couldn’t hold him. I smiled. This was what the dog had been waiting for. His owner had returned. I whispered to the dog, “Are you ready now?” though I already knew the answer. Quietly, I whispered a few words, to the god of the animal underworld, and threw a little magic dust on the old animal, and almost instantly, he flopped to the ground, with a sigh, his eyes closed for the last time. The last thing I saw before heading home was the tear in Odysseus’s eye as he past the old dog. So, that’s my story. If you’re still reading, thanks. But that’s how it happened, and don’t let anyone tell you other wise. not even Odysseus.
